Feb 4th Shuffleboard Notice Day 1
Aloha all
MKV Shuffleboard Tournament 2020
Day 1, Tuesday, Feb. 4th
Under bright sunny skies with humid hot conditions, we began our first round of matches for this season. The season was opened with a performance by a select group of MKV dancers performing the Shuffleboard Shuffle. Four matches were held in record breaking time. Starting time was 11 am with the final game scheduled to begin at 1:15 but since all players, judges and score keepers were in place for the final match, we were done by 1:15.
The highlight – at least for me – was seeing Joe Smith plant 2 pucks in the plus 10 triangle without touching the lines. I did not know that 2 pucks would even fit in that space side by side.
Final scores of the day:
1. Rob Reid & Mary Lou Sott Winner 105 Karen Shanks & Justin Weymouth Loser 74
2. Terri Jones & Joe Smith Winner 102 Michelle Couves & Linden Fritsch Loser 95
3. Stacy Hadden & Harold Mobbs Winner 102 Vicky Smith & Jim Sott Loser 29
4. Jane McDowell & Nancy Buerman Winner 107 Brent Couves & Sherry Vandersnick Loser 90

A few of the highlights of the day, 5 games, perhaps a record, in once again record time.
Jim Roemer bowing in admiration (a few times) to his partner Mary Goheen for shots well played. Although to be fair, he also bowed in admiration to Sally Thorpe who put her own puck in the -10 while removing his from the same spot.
Judge Sherry embracing the Shuffleboard Shuffle – 10 wave while calling out the results.
Dana Johnson mistakenly cheering for a – 10 from his team mate. I believe Dave clued him in to the actual point scoring. At some point Dana also called out to his team mate Sheila Busch that they were moving onto plan B ?? There was also a veiled threat to Carmen regarding her wish for a new bicycle.
Welcome to Ginny May, playing for the very first time but getting the hang of things by targeting the + 10 repeatedly, occasionally successfully.
Finally our seasoned pro, Terri Jones, achieved an admirable score of 31 points in one round landing all 4 pucks.
That’s it, that’s all for today. If the weather is as bad as predicted (but when are the weathermen ever correct) all matches will shift forward a day.
Attached is the forthcoming Consolation Draw.
Aloha,
Your co chairs,
Nancy Buerman and Mark Sanders,
Unit 270 and 153.

Feb. 7th Tournament
Feb 7th / Change of scheduling – play on Sunday.
Aloha all,
I am supposed to blame this on Mark but I am going to blame it on the weather as we are supposed to have another rainy day on Monday.
We have decided to play on Sunday afternoon commencing at 1 PM. So all games originally scheduled for Friday play (which have been delayed due to yesterdays rain day) will be played on Sunday. The schedule will be sent to you today after play has finished.
The Thursday schedule will be played today.
Cheers You Nancy.

Aloha All, Friday Feb 7th Match Results

Cindy Sanders & Pat Brown Winner 110 versus Mark Sanders & Shirley Fritsch Loser 55
Fridays Highlights
Well, matching outfits do make a difference, hats, tops , skirts – Marje and Joyce made a statement on the court, whether it be to intimidate or to show solidarity, it worked and they won!
Multiple times the judges had to revert to the use of the threat of a beating by the Texas flyswatter when players dared to touch/move their pucks before the total scores had been called out.
More and more players/spectators/judges are embracing minus ten facial and hand gestures. Of course this could be due to the abundance of such occurrences. Just have to mention that Sherry Vandersnick totalled up a whopping 5 of them in one match.
Back to the fly swatter, Judge Joe deserved a self flagellation for one of his calls. In the match between Justin & Karen and Michelle & Linden there was also an abundance of minus 10’s on both sides. At one point Michelle decided that the first one to hit 0 would be the winner.
Final match played today was between Willa & Alan and Jane & Nancy. Willa began the game with and impressive – 12 after landing 2 – minus tens and a plus 8. The scores quickly evened out though and it was neck in neck until the end. After a series of mishaps including removing one’s own +10 and another -10 by Jane and Nancy, Willa went for the win with an amazing final 23 point closing.
It was a long day. Thank you to all participants and especially our volunteers.
Til Sunday,
Aloha

Sunday’s Highlights
It was mentioned today the this is the New Age of Shuffleboard and I imagine we can read into that whatever comes to mind. The puck discussion is ongoing and as participants in this year’s tournament, we should come to a conclusion for next years purchase as to which would be our preference. Personally, I believe the play is more strategic and the game more exciting with the heavier pucks.
That aside, Jim has not embraced the art of the -10 gesture, even though there was ample opportunity. There was a time delay while Jim and Mary conspired on their final shot. This is not common practice but the Judge did not intervene. At one point the crowd was second guessing the judge – incorrectly. Would have been an opportunity for the Texas flyswatter – sadly missed.
Marje and Joyce once again donned their “winning outfits”, they fought valiantly but twas not to be. It was a never ending end round. Terri and Joe were a force to be reckoned with and maintained their lead even thru 7 rounds with no score and a -10. There was a hint of a scandal with one player questioning whether or not further play would be required if they lost, but that was quickly dispelled by their actions on court.
It is to be noted that one particular score keeper appeared to be reversing the numbers and Judge Joe was vigilant in his corrections. Once again a missed opportunity for the Texas flyswatter.
Both teams in the third match began with – 10’s in the first couple of rounds of play but soon were keeping up with each other. It was a tight match with Willa bringing in the winning points. She is a scoring wizard.
Well it was said at the Shuffleboard PPPP that we might as well all throw in the towel when the names of Curt and Diane were paired. They definitely demonstrated their super powers today. It was mentioned that being a south paw was a disadvantage but if I recall correctly there was one on each team in this particular match.
Gale force winds tomorrow will not be a deterrent! That’s it that’s all for today. See you on the courts.
Your co chairs Mark Sanders #153 and Nancy Buerman #270
Joyce Weil stated her match was far worse to endure than a dentist appointment. Really everyone wondering about the 45 minute unwritten written rule because of the length and back and forth of the score. Mark kept blasting through a boom box the tournament theme song he wrote. To keep everyone awake and geared up. Jolted Jan Carlson awake – that’s for sure with the remote control of that thing. Some on the mainland commenting they love the commentary growing.

I did not do a recap for yesterday so here are a few highlights. We had to take a rain break as a torrential downpour soaked the players and the courts. Everyone was huddled under the awning at Castaways waiting for the front to pass. Unfortunately the wind did not let up and it would appear that some players may have had a tail wind benefit. Of course the reverse is also true. We also had flying debris and and chairs obstructing the course. We soldiered on.
Dana made a definite impression with his series of -10s. There may be a mug in his future.
There was some sideline coaching going on and I only caught tidbits of the mantra “ There are 4 things you must remember, now repeat after me and before every shot” It seems to have worked as the newbie succeeded in winning the round today.
Today we probably saw the fastest draw in the west. The first match was completed in 11 minutes!
I was tempted by one of the judges who said they could be bribed. It was not Sherry who is way above board to play that game, but we should buy her a drink now and again as we had to demand a recount on one call. Another judge was looking for confirmation from the spectators as to the correctness of her calls.
Speaking of alcohol, it was mentioned in passing that there is way too little of it being imbibed. Perhaps we should encourage a little more intake to liven up the game and the “thunk” pucks.
I have located the errant Texas flyswatter and it will be put to the test tomorrow – so everybody is forewarned to be on their best or worst behaviour.
Thank you to the Shufflers for the dance. Too much fun.
Til tomorrow, the schedule will be posted by Steve

Well, everyone was on their best behaviour and to my knowledge there was very little alcohol in play. The Texas fly swatter did not make a single appearance.
Sherry was wondering if there was compensation for an on court injury when the coin used bounced back and hit her shin. Someone suggested she contact one of the many lawyers on site.
The – 10’s made a frequent appearance again during play, but nobody beat Dana’s record.
Teri wore her “Beware Evil Woman” badge of honour and Diane just looked the other way.
Play had to be stopped when the pucks started coming apart – another nail in that coffin!
Finally, George had to bring out the megaphone to read out scores. He kept reminding the spectators that hearing was the second thing to go as we age.
This tournament had 21 teams and was completed in a record 8 days of play. Go teams. Thank you to all volunteers and players. It was a slice.
Should anyone have any suggestions regarding changes/improvements we can make moving forward, please bring them to our attention either prior to or at the Shuffleboard brunch which will take place on:

CONGRATULATIONS to all for an excellent tournament.
Aloha all…
Thank you for the introduction to shuffleboard…and to partner Justin!
Special thanks to Harold and Margaret who gave up their time to help me run through the basics and to impart the “3” tips to avoid the infamous very large green fly swatter.
And cudo’s to Nancy for her witty play by play observations… I hereby motion to Nominate Nancy as newsletter ‘editor’… not co- chair 2020 as both Nancy and Mark did a fabulous job this year. Anyone to ‘second’ my motion… lol (sorry Nancy you were just too good)!
I’m pretty sure both Derek and I will like to participate next year with strong winning aspirations… move over Diane!
… till next yeara hui hou kakou Aloha
******* Please be sure to get your $ to the Roemers before Monday. Need confirming numbers to the Royal Lahaina Resort. Cash only.
There have been numerous requests for Joyce’s cover art from the Shuffleboard Brunch. Attached is a copy for those who would like one. Enjoy!
For those of you who were not able to be at the brunch, one of the highlights was that Mark and Nancy have volunteered to return as our organizers (AKA cat herders) for next year. This announcement was met with a well deserved standing ovation. Thanks very much to them for taking this on again, and to all our participants who make it so much fun. See you next year.
Round up for 2020 MKV Annual Shuffleboard Tournament
And just for the record, Joe Smith and I are still exempt because we ran it last year. Co-chairs need at least 2 years off to recover.
Maybe more!
And thank you Steve and Jeanie for all your help with the brackets. Hopefully you won’t have any more family commitments during MKV shuffleboard season. LOL!
Cindy S
2019 Co-Chair
Thank you to all the organizers including judges and score keepers for all of your effort to make this tournament so successful. It was great fun. And Congratulation to all the participants and especially the winners. It was very competitive.
Mahalo
Jeanie and I will do the brackets and scheduling every year and post the daily schedule to take some of the pressure off. No worries.

2020 Shuffleboard Boards Awards Brunch. To be held at the Royal Lahaina Resort. The Awards brunch will be deferred (due to Maui’s Plein-Air art festival) to a Monday. Mark your calendars for the brunch February 24th. More information will be distributed by your hosts Jim and Elaine. Price will be $30 a head. Only cash is to be paid to Jim or Elaine. No checks – no credit cards. A definite count of guests is required by Banquet manager as soon as possible
Aloha all,
Attached please find the Shuffleboard PPPP invite and list of participants with contact #s.
We look forward to your attendance tomorrow in the Honu room at 5 PM. Vicky Smith has volunteered to be our Receiver of Shuffleboard funds ($5.00 per participant or more if you are so inclined) so if you could please make that your first order of business. It seems that for some strange reason we have quite a few non Shuffleboard players wanting to attend our party – the more, the merrier, bring a pupu and a drink – we love to be entertaining.Oh, and as an aside, should you wish to contribute to our fund, donations are always willingly accepted.
It seems we have a bit of a conundrum. The BOOBY prize – you know, the big beautiful mug, seems to have gone astray. Would any of you know about that, perhaps Mary or Bruce by any chance?
Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow evening.
Cheers from your co chairs,
Mark and Nancy

Aloha all, (let’s try this again)
Welcome home to paradise on Maui.
Our Shuffleboard Partner Picking Pupu Party notice is enclosed along with a very special musical treat written and composed by my partner in crime, Mark D Sanders.
Due to a heavy schedule of activity on the 2020 social calendar, the party has been moved from the regular Sunday evening to Monday evening with games commencing on the Tuesday. As requested by many players, we will keep the schedule as tight as possible to complete the games in a very timely manner.
Should you know of anyone who did not play last year and therefore would not be on this email list, but would like to play in 2020, please let them know to contact us to be put on the sign up sheet.
The notice will be on display at the front desk as a reminder to all and of course Mark and I will be at the usual locations with the sign up sheet.
Mahalo to all.
Nancy
Karen has been working hard to recruit and choreograph a chorus line for Marks, specifically written for MKV as a theme song, “Shuffleboard Shuffle”. Please don’t miss out seeing this performed at the Partner Picking Pupu Party Monday night. Bring a pupu and libation of your choice. Players, spectators, worker bees everyone invited.
