Pandemic 2020

Let’s burst out of this funk – this paralysis – and be in touch with our extended family – virtually at least. How is everyone holding up during this difficult time. Please share your story, your situation (it can be anonymous if you like).

Telling all of us what your life is all about these days. Please send photos that can be shared on the site of what lockdown or stay in place looks like at your end. Just know my hair and nails a mess. Hope all of you and your whole families are healthy and safe. The Methven’s stayed on in Maui but finally flew home to Oregon a few weeks ago. Sally left Maui finally after months of delay. Had to fly to Honolulu and then Southwest to the mainland – so many flights cancelled. Wonder who else is still there besides Fran. Cindy and Mark ??? Where are you now???We have spoken with Gwen, Francis, Joey and others. They are hanging in there and still show lots of aloha even with all the hardships. Hal keeping us well informed. Chuck from the shack sent me this attached picture of our beach. Rarely seen like this. Not a soul-not a foot step in the sand.I don’t know about you but Ken and I sure miss our mkv and so hope looking forward to being back in October if possible.When are you looking forward to being there????Lets let everyone know so we can plan ahead. Golf – Shuffleboard – hopefully practice distancing for awhile.Much love and much Aloha everyone. I look forward to seeing you respond and maybe adding to Elaine’s project.

Cindy emailed- Hello everyone!  Mark and I finally made it back.  We’ve been here a week and it feels so much safer out here in the country –  Small town, big piece of property and mandatory masks to enter any store. We’re hiding out except for going to the grocery and we have actually eaten outside at a restaurant twice.  Something I hadn’t done in Nashville.  Hope all of you are well.  We just purchased our tickets today to get back to Maui on Jan. 8th, 2021.  Sounds like a long time off but I know it’ll be here before we know it.  Love to all and stay safe everyone.  Looking forward to seeing y’all next year.



Maui News Of Occupancy

Twenty-three hotels and resorts still were open on Maui and Molokai in early May, according to a Hawaii Tourism Authority survey for the state Legislature.

Reports on hotel occupancy and revenue and on vacation rentals for April, released by HTA on Tuesday and Wednesday, showed steep declines for Maui County properties, as would be expected with the shutdown of the tourism industry due to COVID-19 emergency orders. Most Maui hotels shut down at the end of March.

For vacation rentals, which were ordered closed as part of the COVID-19 response, Maui County continued to have the largest supply of the four counties, but the total was down 63 percent compared to last April, an HTA report said. Occupancy was at 4 percent, down 75 percentage points, but the average daily rate was down only 4 percent to $237.

Occupancy for Maui County hotels in April was 11 percent, down 68 percentage points from a year earlier. Revenue per available room was only $13, compared to $306 a year ago, a 96 percent decline. The average daily room rate was $121, tumbling 69 percent from $387.

Only the Lahaina/Kaanapali/Kapalua region reported for the month with room revenue of $4, down 98 percent; room rates of $90, down 72 percent; and occupancy of 5 percent, down 74 percentage points.

Wailea, the state’s top region in all categories in most surveys, did not report because the majority of the hotels were closed, an HTA official said. There was an insufficient amount of data for reporting purposes. The same was true for “Other Maui County,” which includes the two shuttered luxury resorts on Lanai.

The hotels still open in early May were asked to respond to a proposal to have visitors given one-time use keys for compliance with the 14-day quarantine for arrivals from the Mainland. If the visitors were to leave the room, they could be locked out and would need to contact the front desk to get another key. The front desk would notify law enforcement of the violation of emergency quarantine rules.

• Central Maui — Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport, Maui Beach Hotel.

• South Maui — Castle Kamaole Sands; Residence Inn Maui Wailea; Wailea Beach Villas, A Destination Luxury Hotel; Maui Coast Hotel; Aston at the Maui Banyan; Aston Maui Hill.

• Upcountry — Lumeria Maui.

• West Maui — Honua Kai Resort & Spa, Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club Napili & Lahaina Villas, Napili Kai Beach Resort, The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, Best Western Pioneer Inn, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, Maui Kaanapali Villas, Aston at Papakea Resort, Aston at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach, Aston Kaanapali Shores, Aston Mahana at Kaanapali, Aston Paki Maui.

Chuck Johnson first started working at the Maui Kaanapali Villas back in 1986. Chuck has been a big supporter and sponsor of the MKV Annual Shuffleboard Tournaments and Mai Tai Parties and other fun activities at our Maui home. Please introduce yourself when next on propertyj.
In 2013 Chuck Johnson was a Lifetime Achievement Award nominee. His nomination was based on an estimate of over 200 open ocean and beach rescues

The following was submitted by Chuck himself.

I was living in Lahaina at the time and one of my roommates wanted to introduce me to a friend of his that owned a beach concession. I had the day off so I figured why not. When we arrived at MKV I remember thinking this was one of the most beautiful places I had ever been. It wasn’t just the golden sandy beach or the warm crystal clear ocean, it was something more special than that.

My friend introduced me to his friend and before I knew it I was working at the beach shack. The interview went  something like this…….Do you know how to swim ? Do you get sunburnt easily ? Would you like a job?  Thats kinda how Maui used to be. I was already working two jobs. I was crewing on a 67′ sailing catamaran leading scuba tours to Lanai and in the evenings I worked as an entertainment manager at a nightclub in town. Both were fun jobs but I really wanted to give this beach job a try. Well my luck was about to change, a little for the worse but a lot for the better. The owner of the beach shack  decided he was going on a sailing adventure around the world and the beach shack was probably closing. I went back to work on the sailboat. About four weeks later I received a phone call asking me if I would come back to MKV and help organize the Beach Shack. I couldn’t say yes fast enough.

I remember the first time I walked across the property and noticed a large group of people. They were all sitting in  the lawn area talking and laughing.  I thought to myself these people really have it figured out. I was a little bit hesitant but I walked over and introduced myself. I already knew these folks were homeowners and very successful people, but I was surprised that this group already knew who I was, they had done their homework. They instantly made me feel comfortable and welcomed me to the property. I never could have imagined the friendships that would be created in the years to come. That was over thirty years ago. And still today one of the best parts of my Job is meeting new owners and seeing old friends every year.

Heres a little bit about our Beach ShackI

Our Hours of operation are from  9AM – 5PM seven days a week

We offer just about everything one needs for a fun day at the beach. We are also ready to answer any questions or concerns our island visitors may have. We can tell you where to snorkel or where to have dinner. We seem to be the place where people come to just hang out and talk story. I can see why, it’s beautiful at the Beach Shack. We also give free mini lessons or  instructions on almost everything we rent. We want our for our guest to feel comfortable with their water sports activities and have a fun and safe time. I even once had a guest ask how to use a chair, no kidding.

We have Cabanas, Stand Up Paddle Boards for rent or lessons, Single Kayaks and Double Kayaks, Snorkel gear, Snorkel floatation Belts and Life Vests, Boogie Boards, Beach Chairs, Sunscreen, Underwater Cameras.
We also offer, by appointment only, a very unique and once in a lifetime activity for our guests, a chance to go sailing with our local sailing champion, Captain Chuck Johnson. I take people out on one hour personal sailing adventures. We use a 17′ Hobie Getaway Catamaran the cost is
$85 for the hour and can usually hold a family of up to four depending on weight. (weather permitting).
I’ve been sailing in Hawaii at a competitive level for many years. I usually do most of the sailing but if
someone is interested  in learning to sail I do that too.
I actually taught sailing and windsurfing at the high school for 7 years what a blast that was.
It’s quite an experience that very few ever get to enjoy, I love it when  someone tells me “thats the funnest thing I’ve done on our vacation”.
Although I’ve been introducing people to sailing for over 30 years I  still enjoy the thrill almost as much as our  customers.
The smiling faces and the connection people make with the ocean are the best parts of my job.

We have sand toys for the keiki and pool noodles for use free of  charge.

During off season we do offer military and kamaaina discounts.

We also have discount snorkel gear coupons that guests receive from the  front desk when they check in.

News on Property

Our 2022 return to our maui ohana – two years of inability to travel we finally made it and this is our observations and things we did and things we enjoyed while there.

From the moment we arrived on property (we were greeted at the front desk by Gwen, Joey and everyone so warmly) and upon entering our unit to find welcoming messages from Angie and her staff (our unit definitely with their love, hard work and care certainly survived extremely well). We felt we were truly at last at our Maui Ohana home.

We loved seeing everyone – being able to see faces and not zoom masked meetings. The selfie type images that made you feel like you needed to run to a plastic surgeon and left much to be desired (sometimes it was downright depressing). Getting outside in the fresh air – having to distance but it was not nearly so distant or lonely.
Fran, Jane, Jim and Elaine shopped, stocked and cooked so I felt so pampered – I felt really spoilt and never allowed to tire or cave in to health and energy zappers. BTW surgery, radiation and infusions seem so far to have done the trick – testing results are – I am free and clear. Hoping it remains that way.
Jim and Elaine organized dinner dances with Wilmont and Mark serenading us. This exposed and showed a lot of new owners what our Ohana family events are like. How different our ownership experience is.

Mark and Cyndy and other shuffleboard players also exposed to newcomers what our tournament is all about and how much fun that can be. I’m sure golfers will come together and form a group to get that annual tournament going again soon too.

Pickle ball and bocce ball looks like it is also gaining momentum with players growing.

Frans water aerobics really popular as is the yoga classes

The Artists in Residence program still in place and if any new owners come on property and would like to join – please let me know – this group have forays to all kinds of hidden gems of painting sites and comraderie.

Hal and MKV maintenance and landscaping crews and others really worked hard to complete projects that really improved our property. Their hard work really shows. Dealing with situations so efficiently. Some situations that could be so costly to all of us they have mitigated.

Our Unpaid Board of Directors work so hard and diligently in the background. Please read their and staff reports on the works going on our behalf and remember to thank them.

Lulu made her appearance to sunbath and snooze on the beach reminding all of us what’s important in life.

The 2020 Annual Board of Directors Meeting is tomorrow 31st January. Over the last several days many committee meetings were held and they prepared recommendations on the many issues facing this property for the board.  Reports were given today and tomorrow the Board will be voting.  The election of new members to the Board will also occur. With the closure of the Annual Board Meeting then the real playing begins. First the Aston Annual Owners Party on Saturday night.  Then on Sunday the Super Bowl Party.  Monday MKV Annual Golf Tournament. Monday night MKV Annual shuffleboard tournament partner picking pupu party.  Followed by Wednesday’s  mai tai party.  Thursday night Jim Roemer is once again organizing dinner dance.  So mark up your calendar.  

Your Unpaid Board of Directors are working hard to resolve issues created by recent changes to Condominium Laws in Hawaii. A subcommittee is being formed to deal with the issues related to commercial leases and other legal changes so your AOAO is in compliance with these laws.

The October AOAO Board meetings was held. The 2020 Budget was prepared and passed. Dennis and his committee worked diligently on this task.

After the various committees met and made their recommendations to the Board, discussions were then held and motions voted upon and were passed or failed. I strongly suggest you read minutes of the meetings. Bill Finigan and Chris Bounds did a phenomenal job working on their recommendations for some very difficult issues. Bill and his committee worked with contracts for new pavings and road repair work. Chris and his committee were fast learners and after exhaustive research recommended that Aston remain the front desk operators. Jim Roemer presented what has been delivered to the court the amendment changes as voted by the owners.

Lobby 2019 – 2020 – Festive Season on Property was Magical. Trees, Boxes, Lights.

For those of you, not able to be on property – this is what Gwen and her helpers created for the seasonal festivities. Elevator landings – Exterior entrances lobby and Honu room all decked out with 6 different Christmas trees that became such pictures opportunities, I guarantee Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites were filled with photos with so many guests and owners and their families.

New Years – Bonfires on the beach with lots of rockets and flares and crackers. Lots of parties by owners and regular guests with lanai lights up. Property looked so special and festive. The beach in the morning looked pristine.

I do hope everyone read the letter from Jim Crowe about the Federal, State and County mandates put in place for all residents and businesses in Maui to deal with the worldwide outbreak of CoronaVirus /Covid 19 illness. I do so hope everyone and their family and friends are taking all precautions to keep healthy and safe.

Subsequently, Hal Nordblom has kept us regularly and clearly informed and has been frequently writing to let us know what projects are still being done-keeping in mind the healthy requirements being adhered to. Everything – restaurants, stores, spa, pools, gym, mai tai parties., BBQs closed off. Laundry appointments must be made and once used then laundry thoroughly cleaned.

Everyone must self quarantine after arrival. Several owners rather than return home to the mainland have stayed till the all clear message comes. The travel hotel hospitality industry hit hard and our staff (give them a call if you think of it) and talk to them. They could use some cheering up. This has been hard on them.

I have been impressed by how many of our Ohana family have gained the spirit and shared their paintings and stories with Elaine and me. Please check out these new additions to our web site. Maybe it will inspire you to take up pen or type to add to this great project too. Any suggestions on how you are dealing with this pandemic would be appreciated.

Elaine said they have been doing a lot of gardening . Maybe when in full bloom we will be fortunate enough to obtain a picture.

Any other news, paintings or thoughts at this time would be much appreciated and would be shared and enjoyed by everyone.

Updates from our Friends

2022 Annual Bunch’s Bee Farm BBQ GET TOGETHER in Hughson, California.

14 of us gathered at the Bunch’s for this great get together this year. Sally and the Den Dulks looked great as per usual. Everyone did as a matter of fact.

At 2pm Troy set up his laptop and we zoomed to Oregon to Alan Methven’s Celebration of Life service. We raised our glasses with a toast and said goodbye.

It was a perfect day filled with news and an update from Troy on Board news too. With Roy helping Troy with the BBQing and Susan making her unbelievable old fashioned made ice cream on the apple pie brought to the party by Rosanne we all ended up filled to elegant sufficiency.

Some of our friends and family have emailed and phoned what they have been up to this summer. When I have their permission I will post here Please feel free to share and add your messages here too.

Aloha MKV family! I hope you all are having a fabulous summer. We are keeping super busy with our bees which are making honey galore. We have 1400 hives pollinating alfalfa to produce seeds, 200 in the Sierras and 220 in the coastal range where they made some beautiful sage honey this year. 

We had a small gathering of MKV west coast family on Saturday, June 22. Art & Carole DenDulk, Roy Murdoch, Rosanne Mastrangioli, Caryn Childs, Jim Land and Barbara Sonnebend were able to attend this year. We enjoyed a nice visit and dinner together. I remembered to take pictures at the end! When Flora came she took so many which was great.

Hey Barbara!  You’re doing a great job and glad you’re staying on this.  I think it’s wonderful that we’ll have all of this at our fingertips and the new site looks great.  Mark and Nancy are actually gonna be heading up the tournament next year.  Yes, I pulled Mark’s name out of the hat to be co-chair with Nancy for the 20-20 tournament.  He still thinks it was rigged.  LOL.  So Joe and I won’t officially be doing anything next year however it’s possible I will contribute some to the daily updates if Mark wants me to help him out.

42 Ladies lunched, at the Royal Terrace restaurant in the Royal Lahaina resort today 02/18/2019.

This zany whacky crazy ladies group has grown over the years.  Frances Rockey remembers when we were 11 or 12 ladies in attendance.  Now claims she is the oldest and longest attendee at this MKV ladies day lunch. Then we grew and so did our families- wondering how many more will be in attendance next year.

Annual Aston MKV Owners Party Season Kick Off

Annual Meeting held and then season off to a good start with Annual Aston Owners Party, Manager Hal greeted everyone and everyone meeting important staff members. Music, beautiful hula dancers and pupus started of the night. Libations supplied and ages not asked (thank heavens). After eating a delicious dinner everyone went on to either gaming tables or joined the dancing queens circling Hal. Desert cake ended the evening.

Mkv Bounds Party 2019

Chris was elected to the AOAO Board of this beautiful property. This party was the families way of saying thank you for everyones support. Chris not only will be continuing a family tradition of working towards improving the property with his expertise in many fields but he is also stepping up to the plate to organize with Charlie Black next years Annual Golf Tournament. The fun evening included lots of pupus, libations and friends enjoying a fine party.

We braved the elements today. I can’t wait to tell my sister in Michigan how we endured the weather and I almost had to go back for a sweater.  Three matches got played between and during rain drops (actually pelting rain).
Updated draw sheets are attached. They will also be posted at the front desk later this evening.

We did it! 6 matches completed yesterday with a few drizzles but no rain delays. The only delays were due to birds on the court but we still managed to finish ahead of schedule.  The rain then quick dry-out has made the new court unpredictable at times but at least we’re all in the same boat!  A few highlights from Day 4: Harold got us off to a fast start by suspending the “no touching the puck” rule until after the cumulative score was announced. Good idea Harold! Mark and Joe continue to battle it out for the most 10 offs. After Brent’s big win, he thanked his opponent Joe for his help. HA! Karen pulled out some of her Bama cheerleader moves to help with her win yesterday. The shot of the day went to Elaine when she hit right through the middle of two of Nancy P’s pucks and knocked them both into 10 Offs. She plans on doing that again in her next match. Mary was suffering from PTSD and needed some intense counseling (and a few drinks) over at the Castaway after she and Bruce lost badly to Karen & Dave. Thanks to her Ohana for getting her through it. Roy worked overtime as scorekeeper. – 3 matches!! Thanks Roy! There were some close matches yesterday with the last match of the day between Sherry/Alan and Elaine/Erich ending with a score of 99 to 100! What an exciting way to end Day 4. Thanks to all who participated, watched and worked yesterday!  I woke up happy this morning after a good night’s sleep knowing that we had Two Days Off!!  Woo Hoo!  Honestly, I’m having a blast.  New brackets, schedules and the judges’ times for next week have already been sent out.  Thanks Steve and George!  Enjoy you’re weekend and we’ll be back at it on Monday.Cindy

2019 MKV Annual Shuffleboard Tournament day 2

Hello Shuffle-boarders We had a wonderful turnout today for the two shuffleboard matches.  It was great having Terri back on Maui and Gene in the judge’s chair.  Judge Lynn had her act together (lol) and did a great job with the first match.  Thanks to Rosanne and Vicki for keeping score and Roy and Justin for helping with set-up and clean-up for the past week and a half.  I also wanna thank Jane, Barbara and everyone who has taken photos during the tournament and passed them on to me.

We had two exciting main draw semi-final matches today.  Steve and I had a tough one against Chris & Marje but thanks to Steve’s accuracy scoring 7s & 8s, we were able to win a close one and move on to the final tomorrow.  Way to go partner.

Sally & Curt were up against Karen & Dave.  All played well but that Sally is something else.  I think she may hold the record for hitting the most 10s.  Team Sally/Curt are tough and consistent so Steve and I have our work cut out for us tomorrow in the final.
I got an email this morning from Barbara Langendorf telling me about her friend Joe Brakovec.  I never knew Joe but I know he was active with the shuffleboard tournament for many years.  I thought I’d pass on Barbara’s email because it has some info about Joe’s upcoming memorial service and a few pictures of him which I’ve included in today’s photos.  Thanks Barbara for your tribute to Joe
